Student Academic and Citizenship Recognition
Principal's Scroll
Students who make all A's in every academic subject and in Conduct on their report card qualify for the Principal's Scroll. This recognition includes students in grades 2 - 5 for the first grading period and grades 1 - 5 for the remaining grading periods. Students who qualify for this award will be invited to attend the Principal's Scroll Breakfast. Dates for the Principal’s Scroll Breakfast are listed on the Important Dates page of this handbook. At the end of the year, students who have made the Principal's Scroll every nine weeks are recognized at the Award Program.
Honor Roll
Students who make A's and B's in every academic subject and in conduct on their report card make the Honor Roll. This recognition includes students in grades 2 - 5 for the first grading period and grades 1 - 5 for the remaining grading periods. At the end of the year, students who have made the Honor Roll every nine weeks are recognized at the Awards Program.
Mamie J. Mathews Award
This award is named for Mrs. Mamie J. Mathews, the distinguished and beloved teacher for whom our school is named. The fifth grade boy and girl with the highest academic average receive this prestigious award. It is presented at the Fifth Grade Awards Program.
Christa McAauliffe Award
Christa McAuliff was driven to be the best she could be and always reached for the stars. America’s first civilian in space was also an outstanding teacher. One student in each grade level who possesses the remarkable qualities of this special woman is honored with this award. These students strive for academic excellence, are self-motivated, and go above and beyond their teacher’s expectations. This award is presented at each grade level’s Awards Program.
Joseph Ryan Spirit of Mathews Award
Mr. Ryan served the Mathews community for a total of 21 years. His selflessness and dedication to our school community always came before personal achievement or recognition. One student in each grade level receives this award for displaying Mr. Ryan’s caring and concern for others. This award is also presented at each grade level’s Awards Program.
Terrific Tiger Award
If a student demonstrates good citizenship and positive work habits in and outside the classroom on a daily basis, the teacher might recognize him/her with this award. Students who receive this award are allowed to wear the Terrific Tiger T-shirt and participate in the Terrific Tiger luncheon sponsored by the Mathews Elementary PTA.
