History of Mathews Elementary
The Mamie J. Mathews School, originally the Lynch Road School in Midland, Ga, was built in 1952 and was opened for the first time on January 6, 1953.
On May 11, 1959 the Board of Education passed a resolution changing the name from the Lynch Road School to the Mamie J. Mathews School in honor of Mrs. Mathews who taught there from September of 1920 until her death in April of 1945.
Mrs. Mathews was the wife of a Methodist minister and it is believed that they moved to Columbus in 1918 or 1919 where he served as pastor of Holsey Monumental C.M.E. Church. She began teaching in the Tabernacle Church on River Road in 1920.
Mrs. Mathews believed every child should be reared from the cradle in the firm belief that it was intended for success, not failure; for happiness, not unhappiness; for harmony, not discord, and for the preservation of good will. She also believed in the value of discipline and preparedness and stressed this to her pupils. She believed that discipline would help make them desirable neighbors wherever they lived and reminded the students to prepare themselves for changes in life.
Mathews Elementary has grown and changed since it was built in 1952. It is currently under going renovations and expansion.
