Enrichment Clubs
Mathews Elementary has a number of student organizations that meet throughout the year. These opportunities are offered to student as enrichment to the curriculum. Organizations available to students of Mathews Elementary include:
Math Club - Students in grades three through five participate in National Solve It Mathematics League Competitions and activities after school. Students are recommended by classroom teachers based on math grades and scores on CRCT, ITBS, and MAP assessment. A test is administered to determine the group of students who represent Mathews in area and/or district competition. The coach of the Math Team is Mrs.Laura Stokes.
Science Olympics - Science Olympics is devoted to increasing student interest in science, improving the quality of science education and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by students. Science Olympics is offered to students in third, fourth and fifth grades selected by their teachers based on their performance in the classroom and/or high achievement on norm referenced tests in science. Students participate after school. Mrs. Diane Tucker is the Science Olympics Coach.
Geography Bee/Bowl - Students participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The activities are designed to spark interest in geography and increase awareness about geography. Students in grades four and five are eligible for participation in the National Geography Bee. Students answer questions designed to test his/her geography knowledge with the school wide winner representing Mathews at the district/state level of the National Geography Bee. Ms. Aetavia Williams is the faculty coach.
Chess Club - Chess-in-the-Schools is dedicated to stimulating and enhancing learning skills by teaching chess. The chess club meets after school and is open to students in grades three through five. Chess-in-the-Schools develops critical thinking skills, builds self-esteem, teaches discipline, fosters positive social skills, motivates academic achievement, and empowers children to succeed. The Chess Team is coached by Mrs. Linda Boyd.
Safety Patrol - The Safety Patrol works very hard to help make Mathews a safe and pleasant place for all students. The teams of 5th graders rotate throughout the year. Some of their responsibilities include the raising and lowering of the flags each day, monitoring hall behavior at the beginning and end of school each day, and working with school staff to maintain orderliness of students waiting for the bus or for their car rides home. Members of the Safety Patrol are selected by fourth grade teachers.
Student Council - The Student Council is made up of a representative and an alternate from each fourth and fifth grade classroom. Fifth graders who have served on Student Council during the previous year are invited to serve as Advisors and help the Student Council to run smoothly. The Student Council members promote many community service projects throughout the school year. Ms. Aetavia Williams, Mrs. Ginger Maness, and Ms. Olivia Binns advise the Student Council.
Peer Helpers - The Peer Helpers Program is designed to provide fourth and fifth grade students the opportunity to develop skills in leadership, listening, and communication. The Peer Helpers participate in special projects designed to help other students become more self-confident, understand their own feelings, make more informed choices, and behave more responsibility. Mrs. Tracy Shields is the Peer Helpers advisor.
